The Cathedral

Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, originally known as St. John of Vermilion Church, is located on the site of the first Roman Catholic church in Lafayette Parish.

The land was donated by Jean Mouton, father of future governor Alexandre Mouton, on December 30, 1821, at the time when parcels were being divided to establish the future town of Vermilionville, which would later be renamed Lafayette in 1884.

The current church was built in the Dutch Neo-Romanesque style. Construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1916.
